최근 본 전시 중 가장 인상깊었고, 순수 미술계와 몰입형 전시가 급속히 가까워지고 있다는 것을 실감할 수 있었다. 

 

넓은 공간 규모에서 상영되는 뛰어난 퀄리티의 영상과 훌륭한 sound system으로 david hockney의 작품을 온전히 느낄 수 있는 경험을 할 수 있어서 정말 좋았다.  단순히 영상을 상영하고 관객이 보게끔하는 일회성이 강한 그래픽 영상과는 달랐다. 영상 자체 퀄리티와 구성 레이아웃이 좋았고, 그의 작품 과정을 볼 수 있다는 점에서도 좋았다.  Immersive Arts가 일반 전시와의 다른 점은 '관람객들과의 interaction'이지 않을까?  데이비드 호크니의 작품 속에 들어가는 것 같은 경험, 또한 내가 그의 작품의 일부가 된 것 같은 경험을 할 수 있어서 특별하게 느껴졌다. 

 

David Hockney 작품의 매력은 아름다운 색감과 재미난 조합에 있다고 생각하는데 이 전시 공간의 프로젝션 / 라이팅이 그 것을 잘 표현하고 있었다. 작품을 설명하는 호크니의 목소리와 그 뒤의 사운드 트랙도 영상과 잘 어우러져서 그의 작품에 더 몰입할 수 있었다.

 

신문에서 본 이 말이 인상깊다. 

 

'지금까지의 몰입형 전시는 대개 이미 작고한 작가의 작품들에 그래픽 작업을 넣고 움직이게 해서 재미를 주고 눈을 즐겁게 해주는 것에 그쳤습니다. (몰입형 전시로) 깊이 있게 어떤 작가의 작품을 표현하려면 그 작가가 직접 관여할 필요가 있습니다. 그러려면 생존 작가의 전시여야 하고요.'  

 

사실 난 이 전시를 보기 전엔 작은 핸드폰 스크린 속에서만 보았던 그의 작품이 나의 취향이 아니라고 생각했었는데 이번 전시를 통해 내 생각이 조금 바뀌었다. 데이비드 호크니 작품 매력적이야--!

Using large-scale projection in a remarkable new space, David Hockney takes us on a personal journey through sixty

years of his art. Lightroom's vast walls and revolutionary sound system enable us to experience the world through Hockney's eyes. His life-long fascination with the possibilities of new media is given vibrant expression in a show that invites us to look more closely, more truly and more joyously.

 

In a cycle of six themed chapters, with a specially composed score by Nico Muhly and a commentary by the artist himself, Hockney reveals his process to us. His voice is in our ears as we watch him experimenting with perspective, using photography as a way of ‘drawing with a camera’, capturing the passing of time in his polaroid collages and the joy of spring on his iPad, and showing us why only paint can properly convey the hugeness of the Grand Canyon. We join him on his audio-visual Wagner Drive, roaring up into the San Gabriel Mountains, and into the opera house by means of animated re-creations of his stage designs.

From LA to Yorkshire, and up to the present day in Normandy, the show is an unprecedented opportunity to spend time in the presence of one of the great popular geniuses of the art world still innovating, still creating beauty and awe.
